Valerie Anderson

I am a Professor in the Faculty of Business and Law, with experience of working in Human Resource Development operational and consultancy roles in both private and public sector organisations. 

Alongside my contributions to academic publications – which includes 17 professional publications, 6 book chapters and 26 journal papers – I have led a variety of practice-based research projects and authored over 15 practitioner tools, webinars, and reports. 

My research interests include standards in Human Resource Management and Human Resource Development; managerial coaching; technology and learning; experiential learning; standards and standardization in HRM. 

Career highlights

  • Becoming co-editor of the leading HRD journal Human Resource Development Quarterly and invitations to join the Editorial Boards for other leading HRD journals.

  • Co-authoring Research Methods in Human Resource Management: Investigating a Business Issue, currently working on the 5th edition

  • Initiating and leading the successful Portsmouth University Graduate School Development Programme

  • Leading on the development of the first International Standard for Learning and Development (ISO 30422: 2022 – HRM: Learning and Development)

  • Becoming Chair of the British Standards Institute (BSI) Committee for HRM and Human Capital Standards.
