Karen Johnston

I am a Professor of Organizational Studies at the University of Portsmouth, and was previously the Associate Dean for Research and Innovation. My research interests are in the areas of public administration and management, public sector human resource management and gender studies.

I have published highly regarded books, chapters and journal articles, serve on editorial boards of a number of highly ranked journals, and on boards of learned societies.

Career highlights

  • I was awarded the prestigious Julia Henderson Award for substantial international contribution to public administration (the first British recipient of the award) by the American Society for Public Administration.

  • • I was awarded a Fellowship by the Academy of Social Sciences for my research excellence in gender and public management.

  • I was awarded Senior Fellowship Award by the Higher Education Academy.

  • I am also the Unit of Assessment Coordinator for Business and Management for the Research Excellence Framework 2021 and 2014 submissions.
