Application advice

Check out this video showing the step-by-step process to follow to achieve the best possible application:

Before you apply

You want to find the course that fits your ambitions and interests, and can help you advance your career. On our course pages, you’ll find the information you need to make the right choice. This includes what you’ll learn on each course, how you can fit your studies around work and personal commitments, and how your degree can help you achieve your career goals.

You’ll find specific entry requirements on our course pages. We still want to hear from you if your academic or professional background differs from the requirements listed. We know not everyone has taken the same path to postgraduate study.

Our enquiry advisers are your first point of contact. They'll confirm whether your qualifications and work experience could make you a good fit for your chosen course. If it looks like you have the potential to succeed, our course adviser team can guide you through the application process and answer any questions you have.

If English isn't your first language, make sure you meet our English language requirements of IELTS level 6.5 or equivalent

There are a number of ways to fund your postgraduate studies with us. On our fees and funding page, you’ll find information on tuition fees, additional course costs, and funding options available including loans and application offers.

You’ll need to supply two references and proof of your academic qualifications as part of your application. You’ll also need to write a personal statement.

Your personal statement is where you should demonstrate your enthusiasm for your chosen course, and highlight the skills you've gained from your academic studies and work or life experience.

For the Global Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA), you will also need to complete a research proposal.

Submitting your application

Visit our apply now page, where you can find a link to complete the online application form for your chosen course. You can save and return to your application whenever you like. This means that if you start filling out the form well before the deadline, you can take the time to make sure your application is the best it can be.

Call us if you get stuck. Our course advisers are here to give you advice and tips on completing your application form.

After you apply

Application confirmation

Once we confirm we’ve received your application, our admissions team will assess the information you provided. You'll usually receive a decision within 10 working days.

If we make you an offer to study with us, you’ll receive an official letter via email. Your offer email will also include the deadline date for the £250 acceptance fee you're required to pay in order to hold your place on the course.

Offer acceptance

Once you accept our offer by paying the acceptance fee, we'll send you a thank you email. This will confirm your place as a University of Portsmouth online student. Then let the celebrations begin!

Hints and tips on applying

First and foremost, you’ll want to check the entry requirements for your Master's degree of choice. This information is included on each course page. Generally, we require an honours degree or level 6 equivalent qualification.

If English is not your first language, we’ll need proof of your English proficiency, which corresponds to an overall minimum score of IELTS band 6.5 or equivalent.

You’ll need two references for your application. Ideally, an academic reference and a work reference. They should both have experience working with you personally, and have an understanding of your work ethic.

You’ll need their contact details. Make sure to inform them that you’ve listed them as references.

We use your personal statement to assess your suitability for your chosen Master’s course. It’s your chance to convince us you’re up to the task.

You’re limited to 5,000 characters, including punctuation and spaces. Typically, your personal statement will include a self-introduction, information on your experience and qualifications, your reasoning behind why you’ve chosen this online course and how you think it’ll help you further your career. Find more tips on writing your personal statement on the main University of Portsmouth website.

Before you submit, it’s a good idea to get feedback on your personal statement from one of our course advisers to ensure you’ve covered all the necessary information. You can call them on +44(0)23 9431 1545, or email info@studyonline.port.ac.uk

Before applying, make sure you’ve assembled all the personal documents your application needs.

These include:

  • A scanned copy of proof of identification (such as a driving license or passport)
  • Scanned copies of previous qualifications and transcripts

It’s always a good idea to start your application as early as possible. That way, you can make sure you’ve got all your documents in order well before the deadline, and have the time needed to make your application the best it can be.

Plus, applying early means you have more time to meet additional criteria if we give you a conditional offer. For instance, if you need to schedule an IELTS test, you’ll have time to make arrangements and schedule retakes if necessary. And if you’re accepted early on, you’ll have ample opportunity to make additional arrangements, such as childcare or setting up a home study.

If you have any questions during your application process, don’t hesitate to contact our course adviser team. That’s what they’re here for. You can call them on +44(0)23 9431 1545, or email info@study-online.port.ac.uk
