In this Q&A, current MSc Cybercrime student Zoe-Clair tells us about why she chose to study online with Portsmouth, how she thinks her degree will help her career and her advice for others thinking of doing a master's in cybercrime.
My name is Zoe-Clair and I am 39 years old. I spent my twenties bouncing between jobs unsure of what I wanted to do. At 31, I decided to go back to university to undertake a degree in Criminology and Social Science.
I finished my degree with first-class honours and then completed a PGCE to allow me to teach. I have worked as a Teacher in Access to Education for the last five years.
My love of studying has never left me, so I have decided to embark on a part-time master's in Cybercrime to further enhance my knowledge and career prospects.
I chose to study at Portsmouth due to the course content and the fact it is accessible online meaning I don't have to relocate. The course is part-time and allows me the flexibility to continue working while I study.
I have always been interested in the use of technology and crime and this seemed like a logical step after my degree. Cybercrime is very prevalent and with the continued rise and use of technology, cybercrime will become the main way in which crime is conducted.
I am hoping that after I have completed my Master's I will be able to go on to a PhD with the final goal to be able to lecture at universities and work on government research.
I currently work full-time during the day, attend evening webinars and complete my coursework in the evenings and at weekends. It's a full-on week but I enjoy every minute of it. Our cohort has set up our own WhatsApp group to communicate and get to know each other as well.
The support from Portsmouth has been outstanding both in the application process and now while on the course. Everyone is an email away and the response time is great. I have also been able to arrange personal meetings with tutors and programme leaders when needed.
