So how do you stand out from the crowd? Here’s how to use LinkedIn’s features and tools to make your profile reflect the unique and talented professional you are.
Employers spend on average between five and seven seconds reading a resume. First impressions count, so take some time to craft an introduction with impact. Try to create a headline that’s more than just your job title. Together with your summary, it should weave a story that offers an insight into who you are, what you do, and why you’re a stellar candidate.
You’ve impressed them with your intro, now you’ve got to keep them hooked. One of the best ways to do this is with clear, succinct information. We already know that time is tight so keep your content scannable. Consider bullet points when describing your previous jobs or a couple of paragraphs, maximum. You can add your skills separately (40% of organisations on LinkedIn now rely on the skills filters to find candidates), but highlighting your achievements in each role is a must.
Listing your skills is great, but LinkedIn lets you go one step further. Back yourself up with skills demonstrations and assessments to prove to potential employers you’ve got what it takes. Ask previous co-workers to endorse you (don’t forget to return the favour), and even request written recommendations.
Schmoozing: love it or loathe it, it goes without saying that one of the best ways to stay relevant is to network. Consider syncing your profile with your email address book to find new contacts easily.

If you’ve created content yourself – even better! Sharing knowledge and insight not only sparks conversation and opportunities for work and collaboration, but helps you become a trusted voice in your industry.
LinkedIn groups are a space to connect, share ideas, and seek expertise and support. You’ll find industry-specific groups, groups for particular roles, and groups based on shared interests and values.
Look for groups in your chosen industry with similar professionals and see joining not just as a chance to enhance your network and build visibility, but to learn.
