Karen Howells

I am an Associate Lecturer in the Faculty of Business and Law at Coventry University, a Chartered Engineer and a Chartered Information Technology Practitioner.

I am also an external examiner for the University of York St. John, the University of Essex, the University of Bedfordshire, and for Study Group Durham, as well as an external advisor for Arden University.

My current research interests are in semantic analysis in digital marketing, cultural constraints on entrepreneurship, and smart technology in entrepreneurship and island economies.

Having worked as an academic in the UK and prestigious universities in Turkey and Cyprus, I am very interested in cross disciplinary research, using mixed methods research methodology, collaborating with researchers internationally, specifically in Canada, Australia, the Middle East and North Africa, Cyprus and Turkey, with my research extending to South Eastern Europe, the Lebanon and Palestine.

Career highlights

  • Gaining a doctorate in entrepreneurship, where I completed the first large scale research study into entrepreneurship in Cyprus

  • Being on the editorial board of two academic journals, The Journal of Media Management and Entrepreneurship, and the Journal of Global Business Insights. I am also a reviewer for a number of prestigious academic journals, including the International Journal of Gender and Entrepreneurship, and Entrepreneurship and Sustainability Issues

  • Winning a prize in Austria, at 4th Conference 'Theory and Practice of Entrepreneurship', in 2007

  • Becoming a member of the British Computer Society, a Chartered IT Professional, a Chartered Engineer, and a registered European Engineer with FEANI
